[Photos: Bradley Martin] With the nightclub portion of Hakkasan ready to open April 18, the MGM Grand remains a hotbed of hidden construction projects. The scale of the resort is so vast, it's hard for guests to notice the full extent of the changes, even with a number of prominent plywood walls. But a tour of the casino floor reveals a busy year for the property.
Hakkasan's massive 80,000-square-foot, five-level empire dominates the Strip facing end of the MGM Grand. While the Hakkasan entrance nears completion, revelers who'll be on the dance floor later this week will have to wait until May 3 before the restaurant opens.
Across the casino floor, the former Lion Habit is rumored to be turning into a sports bar. Currently the space is being used for construction storage. Yards away, the shuttered Crazy Horse Paris burlesque show will be replaced by Beacher's Madhouse vaudeville review. The darkened theater exterior reveals no hint of the work inside.
A blank plywood wall covering the former Tabú nightclub edges further out into the casino than its former incarnation. The ongoing 7,782-square foot remodel is rumored to be creating an all new Tabú Gaming Lounge.
Studio Café is boarded over as work continues to turn it into the Avenue Bar & Grill, a 24-hour replacement scheduled to open this summer.
Further down the corridor, the closed Nobhill Tavern has been quickly covered over. Michael Morton is planning to open a wine bar in this location by December. A plywood banner right next to this site promotes Michael Mina's next project on property, Pub 1842. That will replace his own shuttered Seablue with his spin on the gastropub concept.
